Primal Stone

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Soapstone?

Soapstone is a metamorphic rock composed primarily of talc and possesses a number of incredible properties:

  • Beautiful appearance
  • Extraordinary heat/cold retention and transfer
  • Virtually impenetrable by bacteria

Ancient civilizations used soapstone for practical and aesthetic purposes for thousands of years. The stone has lost none of its appeal in the modern era and continues to fascinate with its unique charm.

How do I season/condition my Primal Stone?

For Cooking:

Lightly coat all surfaces of the stone in coconut oil or grape seed oil. Allow the oil to sit on the stone for one hour before first use. For first use, slowly acclimate the stone to 400°F - 500°F over 10-15 minutes. We recommend periodically re-oiling the stone.

For Chilled or Warmed Serving:

Lightly coat all surfaces of the stone in coconut oil or grape seed oil. Allow the oil to sit on the stone for one hour before use. The oil will enhance the natural beauty and performance of your stone. Oil should be reapplied periodically.

How do I use my Primal Stone?

For Cooking:

  • Follow the initial seasoning/conditioning instructions mentioned above.
  • The stone must be heated up gradually at the same time as the grill or oven.
  • Never place a cold stone on a hot grill or in a hot oven.
  • Heat stone to desired temperature and place food directly on the surface.
  • Monitor food and remove when cooked.
  • When using the stone for cooking, do not touch or move the stone while it is hot. The stone will remain hot for several hours.

For Chilled or Warmed Serving:

  • Follow the initial seasoning/conditioning instructions mentioned above. This will enhance the natural beauty and performance of your stone.
  • For chilled serving - depending on how cold you want your stone to be, place in fridge or freezer 30-60 minutes prior to use. Place food on the stone and serve. Stone will remain cool for several hours.
  • For warmed serving - place in the oven and heat to 200°F-300°F. Remove warmed stone with oven mitts and place on protective pad. Place food in a dish and serve on the stone. Stone will remain warm for several hours.
  • Food will stay fresh and delicious!

What can I cook/serve on my Primal Stone?

For Cooking:

You can cook whatever you want on your stone!

You may find that you prefer to use the stone for specific types of food, but we use it for just about whatever pops into our heads; meats, seafood, veggies, pancakes, eggs, even fruit!

For food that is more likely to stick (eggs, pancakes etc.) the Primal Stone can benefit from a dab of coconut oil or olive oil before hand.

For Chilled or Warmed Serving:

  • For chilled serving - the Primal Stone is perfect for serving cold cuts, shrimp, sushi, cheeses, pickles, fruit, chocolate, etc.
  • For warmed serving - the Primal Stone is perfect for serving meatballs, chicken wings, cheese dips, etc.
  • The Primal Stone maintains a cool or warm temperature and keeps food fresh for several hours.

What temperature should my Primal Stone be at for cooking/serving?

For Cooking:

  • The stone can handle temperatures in excess of 1000°F.
  • Different types of food will cook better at different temperatures. Your food will typically cook faster on the stone, so keep an eye on it.
  • Heating the stone to around 400°F will provide delicious results for most dishes.
  • The Primal Stone eliminates hot spots and flare-ups, providing you with a bit of leniency if you forget to check on your food at the right time.

For Chilled or Warmed Serving:

For chilled serving - this really comes down to personal preference. We like to put the stone in the fridge or freezer for 30-60 minutes prior to use.

For warmed serving - we usually put the stone in the oven and heat to 200°F-300°F. We recommend not heating the stone past 300°F for serving purposes. This will ensure safe temperatures for serving. Always use oven mitts when handling the stone.

Can I use my Primal Stone for both cooking and serving?

Yes, the Primal Stone can be used for cooking and chilled or warm serving. Once the stone has been used for cooking, it will darken in colour and would need a cleaning before serving use.

For convenience, we recommend having a designated stone for cooking and one for serving. We found that the XL Primal Stone was a better fit for the barbecue or oven and the Standard Primal Stone worked better as a serving tray. Whatever works for you!

How do I clean my Primal Stone?

For Cooking:

Cleaning your Primal Stone is easy!

When using on the barbecue, heat the stone to 400°F, add a splash of water and scrape off any residue with a spatula or similar non-abrasive utensil (our preferred method).

Alternatively, the stone can be flipped over prior to use, allowing the residue from the previous meal to burn off! Works best with light residue.

The Primal Stone is dishwasher safe and can be hand washed with regular dish soap as well.

For Chilled or Warmed Serving:

The Primal Stone is dishwasher safe and can be hand washed. Make sure the stone is at room temperature before cleaning.

Where should I store my Primal Stone?

For Cooking:

We recommend that you store the Primal Stone on the BBQ or in the oven. Honestly, ours has never left the BBQ!

For Chilled or Warmed Serving:

You can store the Primal Stone in the fridge/freezer, oven, counter, or in cupboards/drawers.

My Primal Stone has a scratch/chip what can I do?

Soapstone is a relatively soft rock and with use, your natural product may accumulate some character (minor scratches/chips) over time. This will have no impact on the performance of your stone.

Taking the proper seasoning/conditioning steps (as outlined above) will help keep your Primal Stone in tip top shape.

If you prefer to have an unblemished surface, repairing the scratch is simple!

Most minor scratches will go away with an application of coconut oil or grape seed oil. If the scratch/chip is deeper, sand the affected area with fine grit sandpaper or sanding pad until the area is smooth.
